Depilatories — Important Facts about This Hair Removal Method

Learn all you need to know about depilatories

Depilatories are special creams or lotions that are designed to remove excess hair from your body. They are preferred by many women because they work fast and the results usually last longer than shaving.

How they work

Depilatories contain certain chemical solutions that are mildly caustic because of their acidity. These solutions weaken the hair until it can fall off when washing your body or rubbing with a soft towel. The process usually takes, depending on the hair type, around 5-15 minutes.

Depilatories also exfoliate your skin, leaving it smooth and bright. Some of them may contain different oils and moisturizers (almond oil, olive oil, baby oil, Aloe Vera etc), to calm and soften your skin.

Which type of depilatory is best?

Depilatories are of two types — lotions and creams. Lotions are liquid, therefore they are more appropriate to use for larger areas (like your legs), as they can be spread easier.  On the other hand, depilatory creams are best for smaller portions of skin, or near sensitive areas, as they are thicker and can be applied more accurately.

Are the results long-lasting?

The results can vary from person to person, but they usually last for one or two weeks, which is a lot longer than shaving (which lasts for 2-3 days). Depilatories reach deeper than razors, therefore the hair grows back after a longer period of time.

Depilatories do not last longer than waxing, but they are easier to use and they do not cause such pain as waxing does.

Depilatories advantages

  • They work fast.
  • They are easy to use.
  • They do not require a prescription.
  • They are safe to use in your own home, unlike hot wax.

Depilatories Disadvantages

  • Some depilatories contain chemicals that can cause allergic reactions. Therefore it is recommended to use a natural depilatory cream.
  • Depilatories can have an unpleasant odor.
  • Results can vary depending on the thickness of the hair.
